The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the bloodiest and most brutal battles of World War II. It began in August 1942, claimed about 2 million lives, and became one of the turning points of the war. The city turned into a labyrinth of rubble, where every building, every floor, every staircase, and sometimes even individual rooms were fought over. In November 1942, the Red Army launched Operation Uranus, encircled the German 6th Army, and inflicted one of its greatest defeats on the Wehrmacht. This defeat was devastating and simultaneously led to a huge boost in motivation in the Soviet army.
