COBI® Nelson's Column

The Nelson's Column model by COBI is a decorative and educational journey into the era of great naval battles. Discover the fascinating world of the Napoleonic Wars and one of the most famous heroes of that time – Admiral Horatio Nelson.

Horatio Nelson was the most famous admiral in the history of the British Navy. He defeated the French fleet twice and was immortalized in history books – and on the famous column in London. His strategic genius and his ability to predict the course of battles were admired, and his achievements profoundly shaped the history of naval warfare.

Battle of Trafalgar

In 1805, after the outbreak of another war with Horatio, Nelson operated with his fleet in the Mediterranean, blockading French ships in Toulon for two years.

A united French-Spanish force broke the blockade. Nelson then developed an effective plan and won the victory at Trafalgar. The British captured or sank 19 enemy ships and lost only one. Although Nelson was killed, he secured British naval supremacy for over a century.

Nelson's Column at Trafalgar Square, London

The monument was designed by William Railton around 1838. The granite column is 51.6 meters high, and the Nelson statue was created by Edward Hodges Baily. The pedestal is decorated with four bronze bas-reliefs made from melted-down French cannons. They depict the battles of Cape St. Vincent, Abukir, Copenhagen, and Trafalgar. They were created by various artists, and their completion took until 1854, with one of them being the subject of a court case regarding the forgery of the bronze alloy.

Another decorative element of the base are four bronze lions, designed by Sir Edwin Landseer and cast in 1867 by Carlo Marochetti. The construction set also includes these reliefs in the form of high-quality prints.
