A ship that wrote history in naval warfare
The HMS Upholder (P37) was a U-class submarine built by Vickers-Armstrongs in Barrow-in-Furness. It was laid down on October 30, 1939, and commissioned on October 31, 1940. The ship was distinguished by its unusual design. In addition to four internal torpedo tubes, it featured two external bow torpedo tubes, making it one of the most offensively powerful submarines of the U-class. Throughout its service, the ship was commanded by Lieutenant Commander Malcolm David Wanklyn, one of the most respected submarine commanders of the Royal Navy.
Over 24 patrols, the ship sank over 93,000 tons of enemy shipping, including warships, troop transports, and merchant vessels. Its most notable successes include the sinking of the Conte Rosso, the Neptunia, and the Oceania, as well as damaging numerous important Axis ships. For his outstanding achievements, Wanklyn was awarded the Victoria Cross.
