The Allied path through Monte Cassino

The Battle of Monte Cassino lasted from January to May 1944 and was one of the most difficult phases of the Italian Campaign. The Germans skillfully used the terrain and the fortifications of the Gustav Line, thereby blocking the Allied path to Rome.

The fighting took place under extremely difficult conditions: amidst ruins, on steep slopes, and under constant shelling. Allied troops, including British soldiers and above all Poles, whose heroism and determination led to the breakthrough of the German defense, played a key role in the victory. The red poppies of Monte Cassino became a symbol of this victory – a symbol of willingness to sacrifice, courage, and remembrance of the fallen Polish soldiers.
