The Grille Ausf. M self-propelled gun was one of the most distinctive German designs of World War II. Based on the proven chassis of the Czech Panzer 38(t), the STURMPANZER 38(t) GRILLE Ausf. M was fundamentally revised. The engine was relocated to the middle of the hull, and the main armament, a powerful 150-mm sIG 33 howitzer, was placed in the armored rear superstructure.

Thanks to these changes, the vehicle achieved greater stability, a larger firing angle, and supported the German infantry on the front more effectively. In total, approximately 280 of these vehicles were produced, deployed in both the East and West in tank divisions and panzergrenadier divisions.
