The history of the British Phantom

In the 1960s, Great Britain decided to purchase the American F-4 Phantom II aircraft after its own projects, such as the TSR-2, were cancelled. These machines were specifically adapted for the Royal Navy and the RAF and received the designations FG.1 (F-4K) and FGR.2 (F-4M).

The British Phantoms differed from the American versions by locally produced Rolls-Royce Spey engines, modern electronics, and a modified construction that allowed operation from smaller aircraft carriers such as the HMS Ark Royal. They belonged to the most technologically advanced aircraft of their time.

For many years, the RAF's Phantoms patrolled over Europe, based both in Great Britain and in West Germany. During the Falklands War, they played an important role in the defense of the archipelago – initially operating from the base on Ascension Island and later from the airport in Port Stanley.

The Phantoms were finally retired from service in 1992 and replaced by the Tornado F3. However, they left a lasting legacy as reliable, versatile, and modern fighter jets that served the British armed forces for decades.
