Who were Napoleon's "soldiers"?

The French infantry was the backbone of Napoleon's army. It was recruited from various regions of France and its territories and experienced profound organizational and tactical changes – from the traditional Prussian drill to more flexible column and skirmisher formations.

In their ranks fought grenadiers, fusiliers, and voltigeurs – each unit with its own role and distinctive uniform. They formed the strength of the Grande Armée in battles such as Austerlitz or Borodino. Brave, loyal, and ready to charge into the fire in rhythm with the drum and with bayonets fixed.

Grenadiers – the elite of the infantry, consisting of the tallest and strongest soldiers. Originally specialized in throwing grenades, they later became the shock troops. Their uniform consisted of a dark blue jacket with white or red cuffs, white trousers, and a tall hat, often with a red pom-pom.

Fusiliers – the backbone of the line infantry, they formed the main combat force of the army. Their uniform consisted of a blue jacket and white trousers. They wore shakos made of black felt, adorned with an eagle and the regimental number.
